Esther Averill (1902-1992) was an American author and illustrator best known for her children's book series, "The Cat Club." Born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, Averill studied art in New York City and later worked as an illustrator for various publications. She began writing and illustrating her own books in the 1940s, creating memorable characters such as Jenny Linsky, a shy black cat, and her friends in the Cat Club. Averill's stories often dealt with themes of friendship, loyalty, and courage, and her illustrations were noted for their simplicity and charm. She continued to write and illustrate books for children throughout her career, many of which have become timeless classics.
